Broker Denies Fraud, Faces Jury Trial

David McGuffie is facing four charges of dishonestly.

A Napier insurance broker has denied making dishonest claims to four large insurance companies.

David McGuffie is facing four charges of dishonestly using a document, namely insurance application forms, without claim of right between February 2011 and July 2013.

McGuffie, 50, entered a not guilty plea to all charges in Napier District Court yesterday. He elected for a trial by jury and was remanded on bail until August 28.

The dishonest claims he allegedly made, were to Pinnacle Insurance, Asteron Insurance, Tower Insurance and AIA Insurance.

The Napier man was the owner and founder of Advanced Insurance, which was registered to a Havelock North address, and went into voluntary liquidation in February last year.

Insurance brokers arrange cover with an insurer on behalf of their clients.

McGuffie's company sold insurance through large providers, including the four companies which allegedly received his false claims.

A disclosure statement for McGuffie prepared in 2010 said he had been in business as an insurance broker since September 2001 and was a member of the Life Brokers Association, now known as the New Zealand Financial Advisers' Association (NZFAA).

An NZFAA spokesman told Hawke's Bay Today yesterday McGuffie was not a current member of the association.

McGuffie's LinkedIn profile said he had been the owner of Advanced Insurance since April 2003.
