A carer has been caught stealing from an elderly stroke victim by her family who set up a secret camera hidden in a clock.

Shocking footage shows Sharon Wilcox, 48, stealing from the woman she was supposed to be caring for. It also caught Wilcox mistreating Sylvia Williams on more than one occasion.

Mrs Williams' daughter Jayne Hines put recording equipment in a clock in her mother's living room to catch Wilcox helping herself to her cash.

She then opens Mrs Williams' purse and takes money out.

Even though Mrs Hines, 52, knew what her mother's carer was doing, she had to stay quiet so police could investigate and gather evidence.

But other footage showed something even worse. Wilcox, who had known Mrs Williams since she was a child, was seen threatening the pensioner.

She was caught on film threatening to turn off the television if Mrs Williams did not get into her night clothes.

In another incident Wilcox was heard telling the pensioner she was tired and wanted to get home as Mrs Williams struggled to get undressed herself, unable to do so because of the paralysis on her left side caused by a stroke.

The family chose not to make the footage of the mistreatment public in order to protect Mrs Williams.

All of the footage was given to the police and Wilcox ended up in court last week where she pleaded guilty to theft and ill-treatment.

Mrs Hines said: 'I will never forgive her for what she's done. The theft is one thing but the abuse...never.

'After I knew what Sharon was doing I was still recording her visits so I had to be nice to her when I saw her. It was so hard. I would go home and cry. I had to wait until the police dealt with it.'

Wilcox, 48, of Terrig Street in Shotton, Flintshire, was shown the footage and said: 'It doesn't look good does it?'

She was sacked by her employer, Ewloe-based Wepre Villa Home Care, after Mrs Williams' family complained.

Wilcox, who wept as sentence was passed at Caernarfon Crown Court on September 4, was handed a nine-month prison term which was suspended for 18 months.

She was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work in the community and attend 25 days of rehabilitation sessions organised by the Probation Service.

She admitted to stealing £30, but the family said they put £200 in Mrs Williams' bag in January and within several weeks it was gone.

Speaking after the hearing, Mrs Hines said: 'I think she should have had a custodial sentence for what she did.

'She didn't even have to pay back the £30 she admitted she stole from her. It's not the money, it's the principle.

I'm angry and I am upset. I don't trust anyone now.'
