A former Royal New Zealand Navy officer will take up the position as Bay of Plenty Regional Harbourmaster from Friday – a position vacant since last December.
In a statement released today, Bay of Plenty Regional Council announced Peter Buell will begin the role at the end of the week replacing predecessor Carl Magazinovic who resigned in December. New Bay of Plenty Regional harbourmaster Peter Buell replaces former harbourmaster Carl Magazinovic. It gives council a Harbourmaster qualified to manage shipping within a region centred on the busiest ports in the country. SunLive this morning reported that Tauranga harbourmaster Jennifer Roberts' services with council have been terminated.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council Deputy Chief Executive Eddie Grogan says Peter's highly commended maritime career was shaped in both the Royal New Zealand Navy and Canadian Armed Forces – between 1982 and 2006.
He was the Regional Harbourmaster for Environment Canterbury for 10 months before his move to Canada, where he was the Director of the Great Lakes International Marine Training and Research Centre in Owen Sound.
Eddie says this is an excellent acquisition for the region.
“It's terrific to be able to have employed someone with such a rich and experienced background in so many different levels of the maritime industry.
“Maritime New Zealand has confirmed that Peter's qualifications are appropriate for a role of this significance.”
SunLive in December reported Eddie saying Carl resigned ‘to pursue other employment opportunities' after being placed on employment related leave about three weeks prior.
The leave was due to what SunLive understands are a private investigator's findings relating to the council contract with the council's mooring contractor.
