Speaker Announcement- Tim McKinnel
Private Investigator Tim McKinnel will be speaking at 2 pm on Friday October 24, 2014 about the Teina Pora case. In 1996 Police arrested Malcolm Rewa. His DNA matched that found on Ms Burdett and he was eventually convicted of sexually attacking 25 women over an eight year period, including Ms Burdett. In all of the other cases he had acted alone. Today, Teina Pora remains the only person ever convicted of killing Ms Burdett.
Since 2009 Tim and a legal team including Jonathan Krebs and Ingrid Squire have worked to prove that Mr Pora’s confessions were false and that he is an innocent man. The team have a date with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London in late 2014, where they hope to demonstrate that Mr Pora is innocent. Tim will discuss the intricacies of the case and challenges the team face in proving what, for many people, is an obvious miscarriage of justice.
Tim is a commercial investigator havinmg worked extensively in in London and Auckland. Earlier he had been a Detective in the New Zealand Police.
Tim has a particular interest in criminal investigations, including miscarriage of justice cases, and is continuing to develop a specialisation in those areas. Tim holds a Masters in Social Science (Criminology) degree, is an Associate Member of New Zealand Law Society and is a member of Transparency International New Zealand.
He left the New Zealand Police as a Detective in 2005.
